Getting out of Gmail spam
- Problem
- Marketing email had been landing in Gmail spam for more than two years, so most journeys reached almost nobody.
- What I did
- Fixed SPF alignment, set up feedback loops and traced complaints to individual journeys. Fixed the journeys driving complaints, split marketing and transactional onto their own domains, and migrated journeys one at a time, each gated on spam rate and open thresholds. Wrote the ramp rule and recovery playbook that took Gmail reputation from Low back to High in about two weeks.
- Result
- Gmail opens on the new marketing domain went from about 2% to about 50%, and transactional opens from 44% to 85%. Delivery reached 99.4%, the best month in 21 months. In a randomized test of about 94K customers, the new domain lifted clicks 5 to 9x.
